Built around your values, not ours
Every school words its PB4L values differently, so nothing is hard-coded. You create your own values - Respect, Effort, Manaakitanga, Mahi, whatever your kura uses - and give each one its own colour so staff recognise it instantly on screen. For each value you decide:
- the default number of points it awards
- a minimum and maximum range, when some moments deserve more than others
- whether staff may adjust the points at all, or must stick to the default
- the order the values appear in, so your most-used ones sit first
- whether it is currently active, so you can retire a value without losing its history
Values that are switched off keep every point ever awarded under them. Nothing is deleted just because you have changed your focus for the year.
Giving points takes seconds
Staff can reward one student or a whole class in the same few clicks. Pick students by searching a name or ID, or pull in a group in one go — a tutor class, a year level, a house, a subject class, or a saved group. Tap the value, adjust the points if the value allows it, add a comment, and confirm. The comment is visible to the student and their caregivers, so recognition reaches home the same day rather than at report time.
Where a teacher just wants to acknowledge one student quickly, a Give button sits on each student in the list and awards the value's default points on the spot, without leaving the screen. Staff can also deduct points where your school's policy allows it, and every adjustment is recorded against the staff member who made it.
Leaderboards that answer real questions
The student table is the heart of the system, and it is built to be interrogated rather than just admired. Alongside each student's name, ID, year level, tutor class and house, you get their all-time total, their points for the current year, their currently active balance, and a breakdown of points earned under every one of your values.
Those four totals mean different things, and the difference matters when you are deciding who gets recognised at assembly:
- Total earned - points awarded within whatever date range you are looking at
- All-time total - everything the student has ever earned, regardless of filters
- This year - points earned this year, with any cancelled awards excluded
- Active points - what the student can actually spend right now, after redemptions
Filter the table by date range, by year level, by minimum points against any of those totals, or by any column in the table itself. There is a Pick a Winner tool for prize draws that chooses from whoever currently matches your filters, so a draw restricted to Year 9 students with at least fifty points this year takes about ten seconds to set up and is genuinely random.
A matching staff leaderboard shows who is awarding points, which is often the more useful report. It quickly surfaces the teachers carrying your programme, and the departments where PB4L has quietly stopped happening.
A store worth earning points for
Points only motivate if there is something at the end of them. The store is yours to stock: add products with a name, description, photo and cost in points, arrange them in whatever order you like, and switch items on and off as stock comes and goes. Students see what they can afford against their current balance.
Redemptions are processed by staff, one student or a whole group at a time. Because the system knows every balance, it tells you immediately which redemptions succeeded and which students did not have enough points, rather than silently failing partway through a group.
Students and whānau see it too
Students get their own view: their current balance, their total earned, what they have spent, a full history of every award with the comment the teacher left, and the store. For a lot of students, seeing a specific note about something they did well is worth more than the points.
Reporting, exports and keeping it honest
The dashboard summarises points awarded across the school, your top students, and a house summary for schools running house competitions, with one-click ranges for this week, this month, this year, last month, last year or all time.
When you need the data elsewhere - a newsletter, an assembly slide, your board report, or your own analysis - you can export the full student list with every value breakdown, or every individual transaction, as CSV.
Mistakes happen, so individual awards can be cancelled rather than quietly edited, and cancelled awards are excluded from the totals that matter while remaining visible in the record. Points can be reset at the start of a new year if that suits your programme, and the whole module can be switched off for your school if you are not using it.

PB4L works when recognition is consistent, visible and quick enough that busy staff keep doing it in week eight of term three.
